The Many Uses For LED's

!±8± The Many Uses For LED's

The LED, which stands for "Light Emitting Diode" is gaining more and more popularity for use in many applications and appliances. This is due to it's relative low cost, size and strength of light. Here are some of the many applications and items that use LED's:

LED Displays

Look around and you'll see LED signs on many businesses. One great example of LED light use is in Las Vegas. The giant multi color signs flashing messages, video clips and event information are seen outside just about every Las Vegas hotel. Another example is when you go to get gas. It's likely your gas station, if it was built somewhat recently, has an LED sign that allows the owner to change prices much more easily than the old manual signs made of plastic or metal.

LED Flashlights

From tiny key chain lights to huge, high powered lantern lights, flashlights are one of the most popular uses for LED lights. You may already have some LED flashlights in your home.

LED's for Traffic Safety

When you pass an area of the highway that is under construction, it's likely that you'll see a flashing LED light steering you away from the area.

LED Lights For The Home

LED use is now skyrocketing in popularity in applications for the home. LED is now seen as an alternative to florescent lighting. LED products for use in the home include high output light bulbs, 12 volt DC light bulbs, lighting strips, under cabinet lights, light bars, reading lamps, office lamps, floodlights, security lights, lanterns, emergency lights, head lamps, book lights, solar powered lights, outdoor lights, motion detecting lights as well as many other light products for home use.

LED Novelties

You can find LED's used in many novelty toys and accessories like glow sticks, for instance. Yes, those sticks of light that you see kids using to go trick or treating on Halloween night, many of them use an LED. In addition, jewelry is a popular way to use LED. You can now see LED's lighting up items like bracelets, necklaces, earrings, hair accessories and rings. LED's have also made their way into novelty products like glasses, toy swords, toy guns, charms, wands and cheerleader accessories.

LED's for the Holidays

The holidays, especially Christmas, are one of the most popular times of the year to use LED lights. If you've bought Christmas lights recently, chance are that they are made of LED's. Another interesting use of LED lights for the holidays is a string of candle lights for the tree. In the old days, people would light their trees up with candles. Putting candles on a Christmas tree is very dangerous. However, with LED's, you can get the same look without the safety problem.

Surely many more LED applications and products will be available for use in the future.

Home Lighting Provides a Great Mood For Any Room

!±8± Home Lighting Provides a Great Mood For Any Room

One of the most important elements in interior decorating is home lighting. The lighting design is an instrumental component for creating a mood for any room or setting. The one that is selected for various areas of a home can affect not only things such as mood, disposition, performance and even morale, but it can also play a big part in providing proper safety and security for the family.

When people decide on what type of lights to use throughout their abode, it is important to take into consideration how each of the rooms will be used, as the fixtures will enhance and sustain the types of activities that will be carried out and give the kind of ambiance that is desired for each area. This requires taking a careful look at all of the lighting fixtures and lighting accessories that will be installed, and also the types of additional table lamps and floor lamps that will be added to the overall lighting design plan.

In order to make sure that the homeowner can achieve the desired effects throughout the home, the first step is to grasp a general understanding of the various types of home lighting available. The better the homeowner understands the difference between ambient, task, accent and the effective use of natural lighting, the better outcome they will enjoy.

Ambient one, or general lighting, is the type of light that can illuminate a whole room. It is often a great idea to also install some type of dimmer device so that the homeowner can control the amount of light; either brighter for specific tasks or more subtle for entertainment and relaxation. Some of the most common types of ambient lighting fixtures are recessed lights, sconces, wall washers, track lighting, chandeliers, cove lighting, and various types of surface mounted lights.

The purpose of task one is to provide enough light for required tasks that need to be done in a certain space, such as cooking, reading, shaving, doing homework, or doing crafts or other such activities. Task one needs to be glare-free and it should be bright enough to make it easy to see things without straining the eyes. Typical types of task one are under cabinet lights, pendant lights, valance and various types of portable lighting fixtures, such as desk lamps and floor lamps.

Accent lighting is used to provide illumination to specific objects, such as an item of sculpture, a work of art, plants or architectural elements. In most instances, accent one is about three times as bright as typical ambient lighting, although this can be different depending on the desired effect. Sconces, track lighting, wall washers and under-cabinet lights are some types of fixtures that can be used for accent one.

Another aspect of home lighting that is important to consider is the natural light that comes into a room through doorways, skylights and windows. It is important to remember that the brightness and intensity of natural light will vary a great deal based on the time of year, the time of day and the weather. It is always advisable to take natural light into account whenever you are creating a lighting design plan.

The Right Camera for an Architect to Use

!±8± The Right Camera for an Architect to Use

This article is about the cheap camera that an Architect, Engineer or Contractor needs at a construction site to take photos of buildings under construction or to take survey photos of buildings to be remodeled. This article will not cover the fancy and expensive Digital-SLR cameras used to take beauty shots of finished projects. Over the years I have purchased and used a lot of the basis cameras and want to share my experience.

The most important factor in selecting the right camera is the lens angle. As an construction professional you will need the widest angle lens you can get your hands on. Think about the pictures that you need to take. Many of the pictures are inside so you are going to be near to what you are photographing. For example, you are going to remodel an office and need to take photos of the existing toilet rooms, this is a small room so you can't keep backing-up to get everything into frame. Most of the point and shoot digital cameras have a lens that goes down to only 35mm, this is not wide enough. I strongly recommend that you find a camera that goes to 28mm or less. For example the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 has a 25mm lens so it works great for survey and construction site photos, plus the quality can get you those beauty photos if the light is right. There are other point and shoot cameras with similar lenses so look for them.

Once you have the right lens everything else is simple, anything over 6 mega-pixels is fine resolution, SD or micro-SD cards work. One feature that is hard to find anymore in a point and shoot camera is a view finder, the screen is nice but out in the daylight a screen can get hard to see. The battery life of the camera last longer if the view screen is off and you use a view finder.
